Poem and short story previews

A Rhythm Bound

The lantern was surprisingly heavy—solid
cast brass, coated in forty years of sticky
coal soot, grease, and grey dust.

He brought it down to his bench and set to
work cleaning it properly before trying
anything else. He grabbed a tin of metal
polish, a bottle of methylated spirits, and a
stack of clean cotton rags. Working
methodically, he scrubbed away decades
of grime, clearing the vents and wiping
down the glass until the brass gleamed
with a deep, dark lustre..

From quiet halls where
ancient stone remains,

Two souls bound fast by
quiet, unspoken grace,

Have carved a haven far
from worldly gains,

Where devotion finds a
steadfast, timeless place.

He stands, a pillar carved
of honour’s strength,

A gentle guard against the
shifting storm

With mirrored glass in every hand,

She walks as though she owns the land,

She checks her reflection, curls each hair,

Without a single thought to spare

For anyone who walks beside,

So consumed by selfish pride.

Her words are only of herself,

Her ego stacked upon the shelf,

She counts her treasures, demands her due,

The Antiquarian’s Lantern
